New hydrogen-powered car to Landsvirkjun

25.1.2010

Landsvirkjun took today delivery of a fuel cell-powered Ford Focus car. The use of the car at Landsvirkjun is part of an ongoing research project and the further development of the idea of moving transportation energy use to clean domestic energy sources.

The Ford Focus with a fuel cell differs from the Toyota Prius hydrogen-powered cars already owned by the company. The Toyota Prius cars burn hydrogen in a combustion chamber whereas the Ford Focus cars are in fact electrically-powered cars in which a hydrogen engine recharges batteries that power an electric motor.

The car delivered to Landsvirkjun is one of 10 Ford Focus fuel cell cars that Íslensk NýOrka and Brimborg obtained from Ford. These cars were used before Ford selected Iceland to achieve maximum use of this generation of their fuel cell cars. The arrival of the cars in Iceland is recognition of the operation of the hydrogen station by Skeljungur and the supervision and maintenance of the cars which is in the hands of Icelandic Hydrogen.

With this addition to the fleet of hydrogen cars in Iceland, the fleet here has become the largest of its kind in Europe, with a total of 22 cars.

It should be pointed out, moreover, that seven car manufacturers have issued a joint statement on preparations for mass production of fuel cell cars before 2015.
