Grants allocated from Landsvirkjun's Energy Research Fund

11.2.2010

Yesterday, Landsvirkjun allocated ISK 58m in study and project grants.

The object of the fund is to strengthen research efforts in the field of environment and energy issues. Its goal is to allocate grants to students, research projects in universities and their institutions, as well as to other institutions and companies. A further objective of the fund is to make Landsvirkjun's monetary contributions to research more efficient and visible, and to ensure that the studies supported by the fund comply with Landsvirkjun's environmental policies.

In accordance with the object and goals of the fund, allocations are divided into three categories:

A.       Grants to students studying for master's degrees or doctorates.

B.       Research in the fields of environmental and energy issues.

C.       General generating research

The Board of Directors of the fund are responsible for allocations in categories A and B after having advertised for applications. Landsvirkjun allocates grants in category C without advertising for applications.

In category B, in the fields of environmental and energy issues, 67 new applications and 14 renewal applications were submitted with requests for a total of ISK 220m for projects in 2010. Funds available for allocation amounted to ISK 48m. A total of 41 applications were submitted in category A, for master's degrees or doctorates. Funds available for allocation amounted to ISK 10m. As applications for grants were more than four times higher than available funds, it is clear that many well qualified applications will not receive grants this time around.
