Hördur Arnarson, Managing Director of Landsvirkjun, and Hreinn Haraldsson, Director of the Icelandic Roads Administration, after signing the contract for the handover of Kárahnjúkar Road.

According to the contract, Landsvirkjun will hand over the roads free of charge. Landsvirkjun built the roads as part of its surveying and construction work for the Kárahnjúkar Power Plant.

The handover will see responsibility for servicing and maintaining the roads transferred to the Administration. Kárahnjúkar Road and part of Hraunvegur Road were handed over on 31 December 2009. Landsvirkjun will oversee surfacing parts of the road and repairing its edges where necessary with regard to traffic safety.

“We are always pleased to take over roads that will be used by the public, even when they will not be among Iceland's most heavily used routes. The roads in question will be classed as part of the national road system, but traffic will be seasonal and they will require less maintenance and servicing than other roads”, said Hreinn Haraldsson, Director of the Administration.

“Landsvirkjun and the Icelandic Roads Administration have always co-operated closely, and we have transferred many roads to the Administration once construction work on our installations has finished. Kárahnjúkar Road is the latest of these”, said Hördur Arnarson, Managing Director of Landsvirkjun.

The total length of the latest additions to the public road system is almost 60 km. Kárahnjúkar Road runs from the Brúardalur junction on Road 931 along the west bank of the River Jökulsá á Dal. The Administration will now look after its entire length apart from a short stretch from the eastern end of Desjarárstíflu Dam up to the tourist parking area next to Kárahnjúkar Dam.
