The chairman of the Scholarship Allocation Committee was Stefanía Katrín Karlsdóttir, Rector of the Technical University of Iceland. At the presentation ceremony, she said that Landsvirkjun deserved praise for its positive initiative in supporting research by students at the master’s and doctorate levels. She mentioned that few were aware of Landsvirkjun’s vigorous research and educational activities, stating that Landsvirkjun was in fact engaged in major research programmes in many parts of the country.
The Scholarship Allocation Committee was faced with a particularly difficult task in choosing candidates, since a large number of worthy applications were submitted. In all, 31 applications were received: 22 for projects at the master’s level and 9 in doctoral programmes. The projects receiving scholarships belong to numerous academic disciplines: engineering, geochemistry, glaciology, economics, business studies, law, geography, history and environmental studies.
The six scholarships were presented to Ármann Gylfason, Ásta Rut Hjartardóttir, Bergur Sigfússon, Eiríkur S. Svavarsson, Rúnar Unnþórsson and Unnur Birna Karlsdóttir.
