Landsvirkjun plans to drill prospecting boreholes at Gjástykki in the Thingeyjarsveit district. The exploration is a necessary step in collecting information on whether the area has usable geothermal resources. Landsvirkjun has decided to assess the environmental impact of drilling up to three prospecting boreholes on the same site.
The initial assessment report describes the planned project and site. It contains a discussion on the environmental issues that will be addressed in the assessment. It also specifies what data is available to be used in the assessment and what investigations are planned regarding the environmental impact assessment.
Everyone is entitled to inspect the initial assessment report and submit comments. The deadline to submit comments expires on 28 August 2009.
