All of Landsvirkjun's operations are certified according to the international environmental management systems standard ÍST EN 14001. Certification covers energy production, the sale and delivery of electricity, research, and the management of maintenance and new installations at Blanda Power Station, Fljótsdalur Station and the power stations in the Lake Mývatn, River Sogid and River Thjórsá areas.

Companies with ISO 14001 certification have undergone a process involving policy formulation for environmental issues and a detailed examination of the organisation's environmental impact. They set environmental policies and goals on how to reduce the significant environmental impact of their operations. The ISO 14001 standard expects the achievement of goals and the implementation of continuous improvements.

Landsvirkjun has identified significant environmental factors in its operation and has thoroughly reviewed all the processes involved. At the same time, the company has prepared an action plan to monitor and manage these factors with the goal of reducing their impact.

This means that work procedures have been established to document departures and comments. Employees also manage information on the use of fossil fuels as the company aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. With the assistance of green accounting, information on all waste from operations is also managed, with the goal of reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills. The company is making cContinuous improvements in handling material with warning labels and hazardous wastes, and seeks to reduce their use.

Landsvirkjun collects information on the status of the company's environmental issues and publishes it annually in its Environmental Report.
