We Generate Progress

Construction of the 690 MW Kárahnjúkar hydroelectric project in Eastern Iceland started in 2003 and the six turbines came into full production in the late 2007. The project is owned by Landsvirkjun and is the largest project that has been developed in the country with a total cost of approximately 1.3 billion EUR.

We Generate Power

Landsvirkjun is the largest electricity producer in Iceland and a majority owner in the national grid company and system operator Landsnet.
Landsvirkjun's power generation is entirely based on production from hydropower and geothermal energy with small backup systems based on fossil fuel only used in cases of system break-down.

Visit our Power Stations

Each summer, from June until the end of August, Landsvirkjun opens many of its power stations to tourists. Every year five stations are open to the public, as well as a Visitor Centre in the Végarður community centre in Fljótsdalur, where the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Project is introduced.

Certifications

Landsvirkjun's operations are certified according to the ISO 9001 Quality Management Stadard and the company's electricity production is certified according to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard. Landsvirkjun received a certification of origin for its electricity production as green energy from the German certifier TÜV SÜD.
