Landsvirkjun is a leader in the production of electricity from emission free renewables in Iceland and a successful competitor internationally in attracting power-intensive industries to Iceland. Landsvirkjun has over 30 years of expericenc of design, construction and operation of power system built on hydropower and geothermal energy.

Landsvirkjun is the largest electricity producer in Iceland and a majority owner in the national grid company and system operator Landsnet.
Landsvirkjun's power generation is entirely based on production from hydropower and geothermal energy with small backup systems based on fossil fuel only used in cases of system break-down.

Each summer, from June until the end of August, Landsvirkjun opens many of its power stations to tourists. Every year five stations are open to the public, as well as a Visitor Centre in the Végarður community centre in Fljótsdalur, where the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Project is introduced.

The Sustainability Initiative of Landsvirkjun and Alcoa Fjardal aims at monitoring the social, environmental and economic impacts of the Karahnjukar Hydroelectrical Project and the Fjardaal aluminium smelter.

Landsvirkjun's operations are certified according to the ISO 9001 Quality Management Stadard and the company's electricity production is certified according to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard. Landsvirkjun received a certification of origin for its electricity production as green energy from the German certifier TÜV SÜD.
