Work on the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project (Kárahnjúkar HEP) began in 2003. The Fljótsdalur Station was formally opened on 30 November 2007.

Kárahnjúkar's electricity generation takes place in the Fljótsdalur Station. The Station generates 690 MW and is the most powerful hydroelectric plant in Iceland. Power from the Fljótsdalur Station is used by Alcoa's aluminium smelter in Reydarfjördur.
