Fljótsdalur Station
The intake installations for the Station are built into the Valthjófstadafjall escarpment. From there, the water falls vertically 420 m to the Station building, where it is divided between the six generating units.
The Station itself is approximately 1 km inside the mountain, slightly further up the valley than the church at Valthjófsstadur. The total head of the project is 599 m. The Station contains six generating units (turbines), 115 MW each. When the water has turned the turbines, it flows through tailrace tunnels and canals and empties into the Jökulsá í Fljótsdal river.
Access to the building is through an access tunnel. Electricity is transmitted from the Station through cable tunnels to the Landsnet switching station.
Near the mountain slope, where the tunnel lies to the facilities, there is an entrance building and staff facilities with a transmission station nearby.
The Fljótsdalur Station has 11 employees, a Station Manager, Maintenance Manager and nine Station workers. The Station is manned throughout the year and employees perform maintenance tasks, monitor electrical equipment and take charge of matters in the event of any trouble, in co-operation with the control room of Landsnet in Reykjavík.
The Station building is closed to the public. Strict safety rules apply to visitors and all visitors must have written access permission in accordance with the applicable rules of the Consumer Agency.
