Fljótsdalur Hydropower Station

Végarður is the Fljótsdalshreppur social center, which has now been renovated and enlarged to fulfil the additional role of information center.

Végarður í FljótsdalOver recent years, the Visitor Centre has been extremely popular. Approximately 15,000 people viewed the exhibition every year during the time that construction was in full swing.

The route from Egilsstadir lies on the bank of Lagarfljót, on either side. At Bessastadir, there is an access road to Kárahnjúkar and a signboard with information about the development. Végardur is a short distance further into the valley, approximately 1 km further on than Skriduklaustur. The phone number at Végardur is 471 2044.

The exhibition in Végardur will remain open during summer until 2013.

When driving up to Kárahnjúkar, it is a good idea to view the facilities from the viewing platform near Desjarárstífla dam. From the platform, there is a good view of the lower part of Hálslón reservoir, Kárahnjúkastífla dam and Desjarárstífla dam. A service center and a café are located near the platform.

 
The Fljótsdalur Station

The Kárahnjúkar HEP station building (Fljótsdalur Station) is closed to the public. Strict safety rules apply to visitors and all visitors must have written access permission in accordance with the applicable rules of the Consumer Agency.

A viewing platform has been constructed opposite the Station building in Fljótsdalur and provides a good view across the valley toward the facilities and the cables lying from the building.
