Straumsvík Gas-Fuelled Station

Gasaflsstöðin í StraumsvíkThe gas-fuelled electrical power plant that supplies the aluminium smelter in Straumsvík was commissioned on 17 January 1969.

Two generators are currently in use, each with a capacity of 17 MW. They were manufactured in Germany.

The power plant was set up as a back-up power supply for the Straumsvík aluminium smelter. It is also used to smooth voltage fluctuations in the electrical system.

Between 1969 and 2000, the power plant's generators stood on concrete foundations out in the lava field to the east of the aluminium smelter, similar to railway carriages. During the years 1998 to 2001, a splendid station house was built over the generators.
