Straumsvík Gas-Fuelled Station

3.6.2009

Gasaflsstöðin í StraumsvíkTwo generators can be put into operation, each with a capacity of 17 MW.

The power plant was set up as a back-up power supply for the Straumsvík aluminium smelter. It can also be used to smooth voltage fluctuations in the electrical system.

Between 1969 and 2000, the power plant's generators stood on concrete foundations out in the lava field to the east of the aluminium smelter, similar to railway carriages. During the years 1998 to 2001, a splendid station house was built over the generators.
