Búðarháls power station

Preparations for the Búdarháls Power Station are currently underway.

Búdarháls Power Station was approved in an environmental impact assessment in 2001. Power development and construction licences were subsequently issued. Landsvirkjun began the construction of the station thereafter, as all required permits had been obtained. An access road to Búdarháls was constructed with a bridge over the Tungnaá river, and excavations were made for the foundations of the powerhouse.

The projected power of Búdarháls Power Station will be approximately 80 MW, and its energy capacity will be up to 585 GWh per year. The intake reservoir of Búdarháls Power Station, Spordöldulón, will be formed with a 2.1 km-long dam over the Köldukvísl river, just above the confluence of the Köldukvísl river and the Tungnaá river, just below the Hrauneyjar Power Station. The highest point of the dam will be approximately 24 m. The estimated area of the reservoir is 7 km2.

The powerhouse of Búdarháls Power Station will be above ground, built into the slope of Búdarháls near the Sultartangalón reservoir.
