Landsvirkjun has, for years, conducted detailed research on the fish stock in the Þjórsa River, dating back to 1973. It was the Institute for Fresh Fisheries (IFF) that initiated such research but in recent years, studies have been mainly prepared by Landsvirkjun, with the IFF as their main consultant.

A report has been released detailing the main characteristics of the fish stock in the Þjórsá River, any changes to the stock throughout the years, and the possible effects of the proposed projects in the area. The recommended mitigation measures are also outlined, should the project become a reality. The main results were as follows:

  • If the new hydroelectric power plants should become a reality in the lower region of the Þjórsá River then this could have a negative impact on the salmon stock in the river, possibly reducing their natural habitat and therefore potentially affecting the numbers of salmon fry.
  • Landsvirkjun will implement mitigation measures to counteract any potentially negative effects on the salmon population, as a direct result of the projects.
  • The installation of a fish ladder by Búðafoss, in 1991 could be seen as an early mitigation measure. The measure was taken as a precaution, to secure the natural habitat of the salmon, in preparation for the proposed hydropower plants.
  • The outcome or success of these mitigation measures is not known but if recent research is taken into account, then it is likely that the salmon fry population at Urriðafoss will only be diminished by 5%.
  • There will be considerably less of a burden on the fish stock in the area if net fishing is discontinued. This measure could also open up new opportunities for fly fishing in the area.
  • Landsvirkjun is confident that if the plans for the proposed hydropower plants should go ahead, then the proposed mitigation measures would ensure that the impact upon the fish stock would be minimal.
