Andritz Hydro to supply stators for Búrfell Station

Landsvirkjun has signed an agreement with Austrian company Andritz Hydro GmbH for the supply of four stators for Búrfell Hydropower Station.

Landsvirkjun has signed an agreement with Austrian company Andritz Hydro GmbH for the supply of four stators for Búrfell Hydropower Station. Andritz Hydro will be responsible for their design, manufacture and delivery, as well as supervising installation. The work is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2030.

The total cost of replacing these four stators at Búrfell Hydropower Station is approximately ISK 2.3 billion, with the stators themselves accounting for the largest share of the cost.

Búrfell Hydropower Station commenced operations in 1969, and its stators were first replaced towards the end of the last century. A stator is the stationary part of a generating unit where electricity is produced. It surrounds the generator rotor, whose rotation induces an electric current in the stator windings.

All stators to be replaced

Under the agreement with Andritz Hydro, four stators will be replaced over the next four years. The first stator in the current replacement programme was installed in 2023, and a second will be installed this winter. Contracts for those two phases were previously awarded to other companies. Búrfell Hydropower Station has six generating units in total.

Landsvirkjun and Andritz Hydro have a successful history of cooperation. The Austrian company has previously supplied equipment for several Landsvirkjun power stations, including Sultartangi, Búrfell II and Fljótsdalur.
