Wind Farm Licence Issued for Búrfellslundur

The National Energy Regulatory of Iceland has granted a licence for the wind farm Búrfellslundur, located at Vaðalda in the south of Iceland. Subsequently, Landsvirkjun will apply for a construction permit to the municipality of Rangárþing ytra.

A grid connection agreement has been made with the Icelandic TSO and a land rights agreement and a wind power concession from the government are being finalised. These are important steps in the preparation of a power plant option.

Iceland’s First Wind Farm

In 2020, Búrfellslundur was placed in the utilisation category in the Master Plan for Nature Protection and Energy Utilisation. An estimated 28 to 30 windmills will be erected south of Sultartangi Power Station, in an area of 17 km2. Installed capacity will be 120 MW.

Earlier this year, Landsvirkjun requested tenders for the Búrfellslundur windmills, subject to licencing- and zoning issues. This was done to improve the odds that the windmills will have started generating energy into the grid before year end 2026, as is planned.

Geotechnical research that started this spring has been successful and is expected to finish around autumn. Preparations are therefore on schedule.

Landsvirkjun’s Board of Directors will take the final decision on the project if all the necessary concessions are granted.
