Valuable Research in Iceland

At Landsvirkjun, we are resolute in our vision of the future. Our role is to pursue a higher standard in all our endeavours, to pursue innovative and unconventional pathways and above all, to achieve the extraordinary. At Landsvirkjun we aspire to become a leader in the sustainable use of renewable energy sources. Prudence, progressiveness and reliability are key elements in the creation and development of new projects.

We support and take part in research in a variety of fields, including research on the ecosystem of the country, climate, hydrology, glaciers and geology, to name but a few. The research is conducted in collaboration with a number of universities, educational institutions and businesses, as well as individual researchers, based in Iceland and abroad. In short, we are dedicated to finding energy solutions that work in harmony with the environment.

The Energy Research Fund

The fund’s goal is to strengthen and support research in the fields of environmental and energy affairs. Among the projects supported in 2011 were studies on algae blooms in Lake Mývatn, tidal energy, changes in temperature and precipitation, the formation of end moraines, sliding at the glacier bed of Brúarjökull Glacier, a metro-train system, silicon nanowires and the making of threedimensional digital models of Icelandic glaciers.
