Iceland’s First Wind Farm
Vaðalda Wind Farm is located in Landsvirkjun’s largest area of operation, the Þjórsá and Tungnaá region. Seven of our hydropower stations are already in operation there.
The new wind farm at Vaðalda will comprise 28 wind turbines across a 17-square-kilometre site, with the first blades expected to start turning by the end of 2026. The main infrastructure required for the project – high-voltage transmission lines, roads and other facilities – is already in place. The aim is to commission half of the turbines in autumn 2026, with the wind farm fully completed and in operation by the end of 2027.
The wind farm also creates an opportunity to harness the combined strengths of hydropower and wind energy in the region, maximising the potential of the renewable resources entrusted to Landsvirkjun.
