Construction at Vaðölduver starts

Landsvirkjun has finalised an agreement with the construction company Ístak ehf. for various construction work at the new wind power station Vaðölduver, the first in Iceland. The deal is worth approximately USD 53 million. The project is expected to commence in May and conclude by summer 2027.

Seven tenders were submitted for the project. Comparatively, Ístak presented the most cost-effective offer when considering the aggregated figures and tenders related to carbon pricing.

The agreement entails the construction of reinforced concrete foundations for 28 windmills, a base for the cranes associated with these windmills, and all necessary groundwork. Furthermore, Ístak will construct an approximately 1000 m² substation in the area, including a concrete structure for various equipment and a machine workshop. The substation will connect to Landsnet, the national grid. Additionally, a significant utility grid, a water supply, a drainage system, and a gravel parking lot will also be installed.

First Part Ready in 2026

Last November, Landsvirkjun signed an agreement with the German company Enercon to procure, install, and operate 28 windmills to be constructed in Vaðölduver. The first half will commence operations in 2026, and the second half will follow in 2027.

Recently, Landsvirkjun invited Enercon to a workshop in the town of Selfoss in the South. Members from southern municipalities, the Transportation System of Iceland, the Icelandic Transport authority, the police, Landsnet - the Icelandic transmission operator, RARIK- State Electricity, and several Icelandic engineering firms discussed various aspects of planning and preparing for the transportation of the windmills since this is a significant task. Landsvirkjun endeavours to maintain excellent cooperation with all stakeholders.
