Business development opportunities

Landsvirkjun is committed to offering competitive electricity contracts, based on the European electricity market, by offering long-term agreements, favourable prices and an unparalleled security of supply.

Diverse energy opportunities

The offer of long term, fixed prices gives Landsvirkjun a competitive edge and is important to its clients. Other international contracts are generally shorter and prices fluctuate according to prevailing circumstances in electricity markets. Energy intensive industries find these conditions difficult as they need to ensure stability in their operations.

Iceland’s power infrastructure is ranked among the world’s best. The World Economic Forum recently ranked the delivery security of electricity in Iceland as the third most reliable in the world.*

The Icelandic TSO, Landsnet, owns and operates the Icelandic transmission system. The Landsnet grid receives electricity directly from power stations and transmits it to distributors and power intensive industries.

Overview of our energy products

  • Submarine cable

The first proposal to connect Iceland’s electricity grid with Scotland’s, via a submarine cable was introduced over 60 years ago. Research conducted by Landsvirkjun, in collaboration with Landsnet, between 2009 and 2010 shed new light on the potential of such a project; that it could in fact be economically viable. The main rationale behind this shift was higher electricity prices in Europe and an increased demand for renewable energy sources, with no or low emission of greenhouse gases.
