About Hvammur Power Station
Landsvirkjun has for years been conducting research and preparation work for the proposed Hvammur Power Station (Hvammsvirkjun). The power station will be located in Landsvirkjun's largest power production area, the Þjórsá and Tungnaá river region, where there are already seven power stations harnessing the energy of these two river systems. The source of energy production in the area lies in Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull, from which the water descends about 600 metres, releasing a tremendous amount of energy on its way to the sea.
The proposed power station will make use of the drop in the Þjórsá river below Búrfellsvirkjun, from the so-called Yrjasker, just above the farm Hagi, down past Ölmóðsey east of Þjórsárholt.
By harnessing the drop in the Þjórsá below the current power plants, Landsvirkjun seeks to maximise the utilisation of the energy resources entrusted to the company. The Hvammur Power Station’s installed capacity will be 95 MW, and the annual energy generation will be approximately 740 GWh.
