Vaðalda Wind Farm

Landsvirkjun is building Iceland’s first wind farm on a lava and sand field east of the River Þjórsá, just south of the Sultartangi Dam.

Iceland’s First Wind Farm

Vaðalda Wind Farm is located in Landsvirkjun’s largest area of operation, the Þjórsá and Tungnaá region. Seven of our hydropower stations are already in operation there.

The new wind farm at Vaðalda will comprise 28 wind turbines across a 17-square-kilometre site, with the first blades expected to start turning by the end of 2026. The main infrastructure required for the project – high-voltage transmission lines, roads and other facilities – is already in place. The aim is to commission half of the turbines in autumn 2026, with the wind farm fully completed and in operation by the end of 2027.

The wind farm also creates an opportunity to harness the combined strengths of hydropower and wind energy in the region, maximising the potential of the renewable resources entrusted to Landsvirkjun.

More about Wind Energy

Iceland is one of the windiest places in the world on land, yet wind energy remains a relatively new energy option in the country.

Over the past two decades, we have studied weather patterns and conducted wind monitoring in the area, including the operation of two research turbines at Hafið. The results clearly show that this is a highly favourable location for a wind farm. The nearby mountains create excellent conditions for wind energy utilisation, and the design of the wind farm has been shaped accordingly to maximise energy production.

The map shows the Vaðalda Wind Farm project area and its position in relation to nearby Landsvirkjun power stations.

Transport of Turbines

The transport of wind turbines to Vaðalda Wind Farm is one of the largest heavy haulage operations ever undertaken in Iceland. The route is approximately 130 km long and will accommodate around 350 individual transports, with convoys measuring up to 250 metres in length.

Here you can find information about the transport process, route preparations and expected timetable.
