Annually we produce 14-15 TWh from 18 power stations all over Iceland. This energy is predominately used by power intensive industries operated by international companies. We emphasize holistic approach in our operations, with sensibility and reliability as our guiding principles, in harmony with the environment and the community. Landsvirkjun’s vision is a sustainable world, powered by renewable energy and we aim to be carbon neutral by 2025.
Iceland is in a strong position to transition completely from fossil fuels and is set to do so by 2050. This will be achieved by increased electrification and deployment of green hydrogen and other e-fuels. The path to a fossil fuel free Iceland could be an example and inspiration for other countries. Landsvirkjun intends to be at the forefront of that progress. Furthermore, Europe’s energy transition requires enormous amount of renewable energy that will partially be imported from overseas, likely in the form of green hydrogen. This creates an opportunity for Iceland to contribute to the fight against climate change via exports of green hydrogen, an option Landsvirkjun is currently exploring.
