Landsvirkjun will tender the construction of a rockfall barrier at the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Station during the summer of 2022. Site visits cannot be arranged during the winter period due to challenging conditions. Landsvirkjun has therefore scheduled a visit on the 28th of September so that prospective bidders can assess on-site conditions. Interested parties should register at firstname.lastname@example.org before the 24th of September 2021. Tender documents will be advertised by the end of 2021.
The project involves the installation of rockfall protection, excavation for berms in steep mountainous terrain and securing and reinforcing back walls.
The project is still in the design phase, and the details have yet to be finalised. Site conditions will be challenging, in mountainous terrain, and without access roads. All equipment/materials will therefore need to be transported by crane or helicopter. Safety issues will be of utmost importance. Specialist knowledge is required for the project and specific requirements will be included in the tender documents. Interested parties will not be reimbursed for costs associated with the site visit but are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the conditions on-site.
- Installation of temporary rockfall protection, supervision (of this), and other safety measures during the construction period.
- Excavation and cutting to secure berms and barriers (3 metres in width) designed to last for the project’s lifetime. Construction will be executed in steep slopes, and excavation will involve digging in both loose and solid material and strengthening the back wall (approx. 4 metres in height).
- The installation of approx. 150 metres of rockfall protection (5 metres in height) in accordance with the requirements and instructions of the manufacturer as well as any associated ground and foundation work for the structure (concrete foundations, drilling and anchors etc.).
- Securing loose cuttings on-site (with iron netting and anchors).
Details of the on-site visit:
The on-site visit will take place on the 28th of September 2021. The tour will begin at the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Station at 11 am and will finish at 1 pm. Lunch is not included. A short presentation will be held, followed by an excursion to Kárahnjúkar. The group will follow the existing hiking trail in the area, but appropriate footwear (hiking shoes) is recommended. Participants will need to be in reasonably good physical condition, as conditions are demanding.
Prospective bidders are encouraged to participate in the on-site visit to understand the nature and complexity of the project.
The trip from Egilsstaðir to Kárahnjúkar takes approx. 30 mins. The on-site visit has been organised to accommodate drive time and domestic flights to and from the destination in the morning and afternoon.
Further information can be requested at email@example.com before the 24th of September 2021.
